I have some questions about the hardware on a new computer I’m planning to build for rendering in Artlantis.
I also need some advice on the software side as well.
My plan is to build a machine to render as a network node and also to use 2-3 other computers to help with the rendering.
For now we have Artlantis 6 in the office, but upgrading is an option if needed.
The hardware choice for the new machine is still in question.
Intel i9-7960X or AMD threadripper 2 2950X?
These are my two leading choices for a processor.
RAM will be 64 gb.
Video will not be so important as it will be network renderer.
I hope that this info is enough for you guys to point me to the right direction.
The questions that I have for now are:
1, Which of these processors is better for Artlantis and why?
2. What software to install on every machine?
I hope I can get some help on this as I don’t really know what’s best for this case scenario.
According to tests we found on the internet « Intel i9-7960X » seems better, but we don’t think there should be a lot of difference for Artlantis.
If you speak about Abvent Software, You need to install Artlantis suite and the Media library on your main machine and the Network Client on the other machines.
Hi Camille, thanks for your answer.
I’m a bit surprised. What I have seen on the web so far is that the 2950X comes on top when people benchmark rendering.
Why do you think intel is better? Am I missing something?
One of my colleagues told me about the Intel, but if you found out the 2950X is better, as I told you, he also said it should not really make a difference for Artlantis.
Hi, we’ve tested both. The rendering performance is almost the same, the 2950X in our tests was 1,6% faster, so the difference is almost irrelevant. The advantage of the AMD platform is that the new CPU’s will be compatible with the current motherboards, so when a new CPU becomes available you can keep all the system and just change the CPU. With intel you can’t do that. Also for a similar performance level the 2950x price is much better.
